Philippines’ First eSports Gold Medal in MLBB SEA
Mobile Legends: Bang Bang is a multiplayer online battle arena game that was launched in 2016 and has since gained a massive following among Filipinos. Back in 2020, MLBB had over 100 million registered users and 25 million monthly active users in the Philippines based from Esquire. It kept growing from there and a lot of MLBB professional eSports players started vying for the championship title.
In 2019, Team Sibol, a Mobile Legends eSports team represented the Philippines in the Southeast Asian Games and managed to reach the gold medal match by beating Vietnam in the lower bracket semifinals and then battling it out against Malaysia. Sibol struggled in the first few minutes during Game 1, but they were able to annihilate Indonesia’s heroes using their split-push strategy. This gave them the opportunity to secure the win during game 1.
The tides of the battle were unpredictable, whichever team had the competitive advantage during the early phase of the games didn’t necessarily mean that they would emerge victorious. Their nail-biting clashes were on another level and the players were able to show how much they’ve trained for this very moment. It wasn’t long before Indonesia secured games 2 and 3.
Sibol got back on track and decided to go for their comfort picks. Their split-push strategy combined with a tankier build helped them secure the fourth match. Game 5 was the last push and Sibol didn’t disappoint. They bagged the Philippines’ first eSports Gold in SEA, a notable achievement for the Philippine eSports community.
